BUREAU OF ENGRAVING AND PRINTING - Jim Colyer

Introduction The Bureau of Engraving and Printing is part of the United States Treasury Department. BEP is located at 14th and C streets, one block from the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The Bureau is involved in the many steps of currency production. It designs, engraves and prints our money. It also prints U.S. stamps and White House invitations. history A private firm produced the first government notes. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing came into existence in 1861 as a processing center. Over time, it took on all facets of production. BEP has been at its present site since 1914. A second facility was opened in Fort Worth, Texas in 1991 for dispersing money in the west. Tradition is valued. Bureau engravers use many of the same tools in use for centuries.
